In 2000, leaders from the 189 countries in the UN promised to deliver eight Millennium Development Goals by 2015. These goals – to end extreme poverty and hunger, reverse the spread of HIV/Aids and malaria, and to give all children an education – are ambitious. But they are simple and achievable.
Since then, most of the world’s powers have more or less forgotten what they had promised and it is very probable that these goals will not be met. The 45 photos on the Guardian’s website and their associated stories will not change the world, but they may help you better understand what its problems are.

Magnum Photos announces the fifth Inge Morath Prize to be awarded to a woman photographer under thirty years of age. The $5000 prize is given to assist in the completion of a long term documentary project.
Inge Morath was an Austrian-born photographer who was associated with Magnum for almost fifty years. She died in January, 2002. As Inge devoted much of her enthusiasm to encouraging women photographers, this award is given as a tribute by her colleagues.

The UK Government are about to propose restrictions on photography in public places which could make street photography and documentary photography against the law. There’s a petition on the Downing St website against the Government’s proposals to restrict the use of photography in public areas.
